Live dashboards

Push metrics, alerts, and data changes to clients as they happen, without a poll loop.

The problem

Polling is a compromise. Each poll interval is a window where the data is stale. Each poll request is a round-trip that returns nothing when there is nothing to return. At scale, polling creates unnecessary load on your backend and on your database.

The alternative, server-sent events or WebSockets, requires infrastructure. If that infrastructure bills per open connection, idle connections become an unexpected cost.

How Celeris solves it

Your server pushes the data the moment that it changes. Subscribers receive the data immediately, with no poll interval and no staleness window. When nothing changes, no traffic flows. Your largest cost follows the messages that Celeris delivers, not the idle connections.

With metered billing, the cost follows the actual activity, not the number of users who have the page open. A user with an open dashboard tab and no data changes costs connection minutes only, not per-message charges.

Subscribe to a metrics channel

const client = createClient({ credentialProvider });
const channel = client.channel("metrics-production");

const metrics = channel.segment("metrics");
metrics.onMessage((payload) => {
  const update = readJson(payload);
  updateChart(update.metric, update.value, update.timestamp);
});
metrics.subscribe();

await channel.connect();

Publish from your backend when a metric crosses a threshold, a job completes, or a system alert occurs. All subscribers update immediately.

Relevant features

  • Metered billing: you pay for delivered messages and connection minutes, not for a peak connection tier
  • Multi-region: US and EU regions. Connections enter the AWS Global Accelerator network at one of 130 Points of Presence in 95 cities across 53 countries
  • No polling: server push removes the staleness window and the unnecessary backend load
